Range And Accuracy In Accordance With International Standard:

• Anyone purchasing a laser distance measurer wants to know two things above all else: How precise is the instrument? And how big is its range? In the past, however, it was precisely these specifications that were often calculated under very dissimilar conditions: At what temperature was the measurement performed? How bright or dark were the surroundings? What was the texture of the surfaces being measured? How reflective was the measuring target? Numerous factors affected comparability – and the communicated results were often only achieved under laboratory conditions.
• Nowadays a remedy is provided by an internationally valid standard: ISO 16331-1 from the “International Organization for Standardization”.
• Whereas each manufacturer used to be responsible for the measuring accuracy specifications of its own instruments, ISO 16331-1 now clearly regulates the test conditions under which the range and accuracy of a laser distance measurer have to be ascertained.
• It defines uniform parameters: from background brightness to reflectivity and surface condition of the measuring target to ensure that these are objectively comparable.
• Using, for example, exact kLux values, it describes how favorable and unfavorable measuring conditions have to be defined in outdoor and indoor applications.
• It specifies special measuring conditions (e.g. on target plates or using natural targets) that every user will know from his own everyday use.
• Above all, it ensures that the definition of range and measuring accuracy applies not only under laboratory conditions, but also in everyday use (e.g. on a construction site).
• ISO 16331-1 has, however, one main benefit for the potential buyer and subsequent user of laser distance measurers: it gives him objective and comparable information about the accuracy and range of hand-held laser distance measurers, which he can rely on 100% and also refer to if necessary.
